Arson Suspected In HoCo Apartment Fire That Injured Firefighter

HOWARD COUNTY, MD — Shortly after 3:30 a.m. Tuesday, Howard County firefighters were called out to an apartment fire in the 10400 block of Hickory Ridge Road in Columbia. They found flames on the second floor and had to help evacuate several residents from the building. The fire crept up to the third floor and into the attic, leading firefighters to spend just under an hour to bring the fire under control. Twelve apartments were damaged and approximately 20 residents have been displaced. Total damage has been estimated at approximately $500,000. One resident was taken to a local hospital and a firefighter was evaluated for injuries that occurred during the evacuation. The Howard County Police Department has launched an investigation to determine if the fire was intentionally set.
