During Women's History Month, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. (SGRHO), a historic African American sorority committed to public service and the betterment of communities around the world, and Magnolia Public Schools partnered and presented the 25th Annual Youth Symposium for students in grades 5-12. The symposium presented students strategies on how to develop and maintain academic excellence, and a 30-minute shopping spree for school supplies. The event, hosted by the Kappa Nu Sigma chapter of SGRHO, took place on Saturday, March 12, 2022, from 10 a.m. – 3 p.m. at Magnolia Science Academy -7, located at 18355 Roscoe Boulevard, Los Angeles, CA 91325. The partnership was created thanks to Ja'Niece Allen, a Magnolia Science Academy -7 Physical Education Teacher on Special Assignment and member of the Kappa Nu Sigma Alumnae chapter of SGRHO. "I am beyond blessed to be involved with a group that was able to provide additional resources to students I currently serve," said Allen. "We are a group of women who believe that the only way to make progress as a society is through our service to one another. The Youth Symposium is an example of how we live our motto of 'greater service, greater progress,'" she added. The symposium provided a full day of educational sessions to students from throughout the San Fernando Valley. During the event, attendees received a hot breakfast and catered lunch, participated in learning workshops with dedicated mentors, enjoyed hands-on and fun activities including a community service project, and had opportunities to win prizes. In addition, the symposium will count toward their school community service hours requirement. After the event, students enjoyed a shopping spree experience where they shopped for free school supplies at an SGRHO onsite resource store. "We are beyond grateful and excited for our new partnership with the Valley Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority," said Meagan Wittek, principal at Magnolia Science Academy -7. "This partnership means new opportunities and resources for our students, as well as relationships with current college students and alumni who have help build upon our college and career focus by working with, mentoring, and guiding our students," added Wittek. The symposium is just one of the many ways in which Magnolia Public Schools seeks partnerships that support its mission of providing a safe and nurturing community, and a high-quality, college preparatory, educational experience focused on the whole child. Between 2005 and 2021, Magnolia graduated 1,700 students with a four-year cohort graduation rate of 95.3% and an A-G high school requirement completion rate of 93.6%. Magnolia Public Schools (MPS) are tuition-free charter schools with campuses throughout Southern California that focus on Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math (STEAM)-based teaching to ensure its students are well-rounded and college-ready from day one. MPS offers smaller class sizes, more attention from teachers, as well as safe campuses that foster ideal learning conditions for students.
