Description
PLAINFIELD, IL — Early Wednesday morning, a fire started in a townhouse's attached garage. Had it not been for working smoke detectors, officials at the Plainfield Fire Protection District said the damage would have been much worse.
Fire crews arrived at the property in the 16000 block of South Waterfront Circle in Plainfield around 5:42 a.m. Officials said the unit's residents were awoken by smoke alarms going off and were able to evacuate before firefighters arrived.
While firefighters were able to bring the fire under control "relatively quickly," officials said, crews remained to remove smoke from the units.
"The fact that the townhome was protected by properly working smoke alarms allowed for a more rapid response by the Plainfield Fire District and saved the structure from more extensive damage," officials said in a news release.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation, officials said.
While Plainfield firefighters were putting out the fire, crews from stations in Naperville, Oswego, Bolingbrook and Bristol Kendall provided station coverage.
