JOLIET, IL — Two Will County Public Defenders for Joliet murder defendant D'Kiva Jones have asked for a lower bail for their client, who is accused of using her sports utility vehicle to run over Derek Walsh in a parking lot on Plainfield Road in late March. Jones has remained incarcerated in the Will County Jail since March 23 and her bail remains $2 million.
During her first court appearance, Jones informed Will County Judge Dave Carlson that she has never been in any trouble before. Joliet police detectives arrested Jones several hours after the death of a 39-year-old Joliet man.
After she killed Walsh, Jones sped away from the scene, authorities have said. Joliet police said that Walsh and Jones were acquaintances and that Jones intentionally drove over Walsh after an argument ensued. Jones had collided with Walsh's parked motorcycle prior to the hit-and-run collision that ended Walsh's life, according to police.
The motion seeking a lower bail for Jones was filed by Will County Public Defender Michael Renzi and Assistant Public Defender Zack Strupeck. According to their motion, the Illinois Code of Criminal Procedure requires the amount of bail shall be sufficient to assure compliance, not oppressive and consider of the financial ability of the defendant.
"The Defendant requests the bond be lowered," the public defenders stated.
The next hearing for Jones is back in Courtroom 405 on April 14.
