AURORA, IL — Starting in the fall, West Aurora High School will have a new dean of students. The District 129 Board of Education approved David Aguilar's appointment at its meeting Monday evening.
While Aguilar's appointment is for the 2022-23 school year, he currently serves as dean of freshman students at Larkin High School in Elgin — a role he has held for the past school year. District 129 officials said in the position, the dean built awareness of student expectations and implemented a "behavior matrix" that was practiced throughout the building.
But most importantly, officials said, he ensured restorative practices, which develop community by building relationships, are used to manage conflicts.
Before working at Larkin, Aguilar was a history teacher and foreign language facilitator at East Aurora High School for six years. As a teacher, he developed lesson plans that reflected the unique learning style of different students.
In the past, he has also worked as an adjunct instructor at both St. Augustine College and North Central College.
"I am excited to join the team at West Aurora and contribute to a rich tradition of excellence," Aguilar said in a statement. "I look forward to making a positive and enduring impact with students, staff, and the surrounding community."
Aguilar has a Bachelor of Arts in history from Northeastern Illinois University, a Master of Science in teaching and learning from the University of St. Francis, and a Master of Arts in education leadership from Aurora University.
