Description
What if you were living on borrowed time? Angela Watkins is awaiting a new lease on life. She was diagnosed with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) in 2008. In 2018, Angela was diagnosed with cervical cancer. After her second round of radiation, Angela’s kidneys began to fail. While she is now cancer free, she has had to endure regular dialysis treatments for the last four years. Dialysis leaves her exhausted and takes a toll on her quality of life. Angela’s kidney function has continued to worsen, and now doctors say a kidney transplant is critical to her survival. During such a challenging time, Angela is thankful to be surrounded by a strong support system. Her daughters, mother, son-in-law, family, and friends have been by his side every step of the way providing much needed love and encouragement. While it has been very hard for Angela and her loved ones, these circumstances have also brought them closer together, strengthened their trust in the Lord, and given them perspective on what matters most in life. Before her health began to decline, Angela enjoyed going to church and praising God, traveling, and spending time with family and friends, but these days, her activities are extremely limited. She looks forward to the transplant that will allow her to live life with as few limitations as possible. More than anything, Angela wants the opportunity to meet her future grandchildren, but right now, she needs your help Unfortunately, Angela’s hope for a new life comes at a very high price. The average kidney transplant costs approximately $442,000. And that is only the beginning. Even with insurance, which will cover the cost of the transplant, she still faces significant expenses related to the surgery. For the rest of her life, she will need follow-up care and anti-rejection medications. Post-transplant medications are very expensive, and they are as critical to her survival as the transplant itself. Angela must travel more than 400 miles to reach her transplant center for evaluations and doctors’ appointments. When she receives her transplant, Angela and her mother will need to stay near the hospital for up to a year, during recovery, incurring substantial expenses for travel, food, and lodging, adding to the financial strain.
