Sears To Close Rt. 1 Location In New Brunswick, Company Confirms

NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — Sears will be closing its store on Rt. 1 in New Brunswick, the company confirmed Thursday to Patch. It will also close the Sears store at the Livingston Mall. Both stores are scheduled to close around the middle of April, and liquidation sales will begin this week. This comes the same week that Sears announced it will be closing the Sears in the Woodbridge Center Mall, and the Sears in Moorestown in South Jersey. That same company, Transformco, also decided this week to close the K-Mart in West Long Branch. That was the last remaining K-Mart in Monmouth County. "After careful review, we have made the difficult but necessary decision to close the Sears stores in Livingston and New Brunswick," said Larry Costello, a spokesman for Transformco, the company that owns Sears/K-Mart. "The liquidation sales begin this week and the stores are planned to close in mid-April. We encourage customers to continue shopping on Sears.com for all their product needs." There are now just three Sears stores left in the entire state of New Jersey: In Hackensack, at the Newport Mall in Jersey City and in Rockaway. The spokesperson declined to comment about the reason for the closures or what will happen to the employees at the two locations. Eric Kiefer contributed reporting.
