The Mayor said this year's annual celebration of our planet will be presented live, after a two-year COVID interruption, as an Open Streets Wilmington event on Saturday, April 23 from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. along six traffic-free blocks of Market Street in Downtown Wilmington. The Mayor thanked the City's long-time Earth Day partner, the Partnership for the Delaware Estuary (PDE), and our newest partner, the Urban Bike Project, for organizing this year's event in conjunction with the City's Public Works Department to create a party atmosphere where people can come together to celebrate the importance of preserving and protecting our planet. The Earth Day/Open Streets Wilmington event will be open to pedestrians only from 4th through 10th streets so children of all ages and their families can stop by and visit eco-friendly vendors and exhibitors. Earth Day 2022 will feature plant giveaways, crafts for children, a scavenger hunt, outdoor yoga and fitness classes, free bike rentals, children's activities, and much more. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy the wonderful array of Downtown Wilmington shops and restaurants. "It has been truly inspiring to be a part of Open Streets events and to witness how people are able to connect with each other and their communities when they have safe space to do so," said Laura Wilburn, executive director of the Urban Bike Project. "People get so creative with how they use the street space -- they set up picnics, they dance, and they create sidewalk chalk art. I am so excited to have the opportunity to partner with the Wilmington Earth Day Celebration and reach many more people with this inspiring event. Open Streets events promote wellness of the mind and body, and we know how connected that is with the wellness of our community's air and water. We look forward to celebrating together the many ways that we can support each other towards healthier communities!" PDE's Executive Director, Kathy Klein, said she is looking forward to celebrating this special day. "We're delighted that the Wilmington Earth Day celebration can be in person this year so that people of all ages can join us in celebrating the importance of clean waters, healthy habitats, and strong communities. We are thrilled to be partnering again with the City of Wilmington and to be working with Open Streets Wilmington to bring this event to the residents of Wilmington." The free Earth Day/Open Streets event will occur on April 23 rain or shine. Visit DelawareEstuary.org/earthday for more information.
