Wallingford Mayor's Proposed Budget Carries Tax Increase

WALLINGFORD, CT — Mayor William Dickinson Jr. has proposed a $181 million budget that carries a 1.82 percent tax increase, according to the Record-Journal. The Record-Journal reports the proposed budget, which would increase the mill rate by 0.52 mills to 29.04, cuts the Board of Education's request by more than $2 million. Dickinson allocated $109.9 million for schools, an increase of 2.98 percent over last year's budget. Dickinson authorized spending $6.4 million from the town's financial reserves in the budget – a $1.5 reduction from last year, which he said was important for the fiscal health of the community, according to the Record-Journal. Last year, in a 6-3 vote, the Town Council increased the spending from the reserves from Dickinson's proposed $6.4 million to $7.9 million to reduce the mill rate. Dickinson vetoed the council's budget and, for the second year in a row, the council overturned Dickinson's veto to restore its budget. Deliberations on the proposed budget begin April 11.
