MILFORD, CT — A Naugatuck man is accused of tampering with a UI transformer and causing about $10,000 worth of damage, Milford police said. At 10 a.m. Monday, police received a call from a UI employee that a white male, 50's, with gray hair, and a gray goatee, was in possession of power tools and was tampering with a UI transformer on North Street, police said. The UI employee confronted the man, who then left in a blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck, police said. The UI employee reported that the accused caused $10,000 worth of damage to the transformer, police said. "With the help of the observant witness providing such an accurate description, an attentive officer from the day shift later found the suspect vehicle traveling on Golden Hill Street and a motor vehicle stop was conducted," Milford police said in a statement. The driver was identified as Jeffrey Amaral, 57, of Fuller Street in Naugatuck, who matched the description of the suspect and was positively identified by the complainant, police said. There were wires located in the back of the truck that Amaral stated were taken from the transformer on North Street, police said. Amaral is charged with third-degree burglary, first-degree criminal mischief, and sixth-degree larceny. He was given a court date of May 3.
