FORT LEE, NJ — A tractor-trailer crash snarled traffic crossing the George Washington Bridge into Manhattan for hours Monday morning. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey vowed to hold the truck company and driver accountable. "The Port Authority is taking aggressive actions against the truck company and the driver that caused this morning's massive disruption on the George Washington Bridge," the agency said. "All such incidents of gross negligence that violate safety standards and impact thousands of motorists will face the full consequences that the law provides for, including cost recovery of damages incurred." A crash on the upper level of the GWB had drivers sitting in traffic for up to three hours, news station PIX11 reported. Steel beams fell off the truck flatbed around 5:30 a.m. and knocked down some bricks in the overpass, PIX11 reported. Drivers on the lower level also experienced delays for several hours. The Port Authority recommended commuters take other means of travel — which also got congested. The Holland Tunnel to NYC reported a 40-minute delay shortly before 8 a.m. Technical issues with the NJ TRANSIT mobile app further exacerbated the problem, as did delays on Hoboken to World Trade Center PATH trains, as NJ.com reports.
