710 Freeway Shooting: 1 Dead; Shooter At Large

CUDAHY, CA — A man was shot and killed in a car-to-car shooting on the Long Beach (710) Freeway early Tuesday morning, and police are searching for the shooter. The shooting occurred on the northbound side of the freeway in the Cudahy area, according to the California Highway Patrol. The wounded driver was able to pull over to the center median and call 911, giving authorities a description of the shooter's vehicle. The driver was rushed to St. Francis Medical Center where he died, the California Highway Patrol reported. The shooting occurred about 12:30 a.m. south of Clara Street, and the shooter was seen exiting the freeway on Florence Avenue, the CHP reported. Investigators shut down the freeway for hours to search for casings and other evidence. Police did not release a suspect description nor a motive for the shooting. "Upon preliminary investigation, it was determined the driver of an unknown black sedan, traveling in the (No. 3) lane, fired an unknown number of shots at the victim's vehicle, traveling in the (No. 1) lane," a CHP statement said. The slain driver's name is being withheld, pending notification of his relatives. Video showed bullet holes in the passenger side back window, and the driver's side windshield was shattered.
