BERKELEY, CA — Two Berkeley public city pools will be closed for construction for at least a month starting mid-April, the city recreation department announced. King Pool, on 1700 Hopkins Street, and West Campus Swim Center, on 2100 Browning Street, will be closed for renovation projects. King and West Campus will receive new plaster and tile, and West Campus will be receiving new pool filters. According to a March 23 memo from City Manager Dee Williams-Ridley, it has been 13 years since King Pool and 12 years since West Campus Pool received tile and plaster maintenance, even though that is recommended for 7-10 years. Williams-Ridley also told the City Council that the filters at West Campus were last replaced in 1998 and are "nearing failure." $350,000 of the funds come from Measure TI, and $660,000 come from the General Fund, according to Williams-Ridley's memo. The exact dates of renovation are not yet listed, but will be announced on the city's aquatics website. The city said it will ensure that both pools are operating by summer break. Registration for summer swim lessons is now open.
