Description

DETROIT — After years of debate, Detroit's City Council approved a revised measure Tuesday to allow recreational marijuana sales in the city, according to multiple reports. Detroit City Council unanimously passed an ordinance in November 2020, but it was challenged in court where a federal judge deemed it likely unconstitutional. So city council revisited discussions and proposed a new ordnance in February, which passed Tuesday in an 8-1 vote. Like the original ordnance, the new measure also includes a plan to award half of the recreational marijuana licenses to local Detroiters in areas with high marijuana-related convictions. During the application process, potential marijuana businesses must show the city how their business will make a positive impact in its neighborhood. The business will also have to show the city how it plans to hire Detroiters and purchase from local businesses.
