Mindfulness in Metal: Blacksmith Your Own Garden Tool and Connect with Iron as element of the Earth with artist Hannah Hirsekorn Try your hand at shaping metal and learn the process of simple, effective garden tool making with artist Hannah Hirsekorn. Make and Take Home your handmade tool. This workshop takes place at Wild Dreams Farm in a lovely outdoor farm setting. Iron is a crucial component of plants, blood and the cosmos. This workshop will dive into the interconnected world of iron and blacksmithing. Workshop includes all materials needed to make your tool and a farm grown lunch. All activities take place outdoors so please dress to be comfortable. Only six spots are available for this unique experience. Hannah is a fabricator, herbalist, teacher, interspecies social practice artist, enthusiast of cowboy style fonts, educator, seed collector and lover of bones. Her curiosity in natural phenomena combined with an investment in the health of the planet have been the driving forces for her ecological and community focused art practice and has guided her overall approach to life. Find out more at http://hannah-hirsekorn.squarespace.com/ Here is an outline of our time together: 10-10:15am : We will add metal to the forge and while it gets hot discuss Iron as an element. Early Iron all came from meteors - there is Iron in the cosmos. Iron Gives life: Iron is in our blood carrying oxygen to cells. Iron is essential for plants to create chlorophyll. We will offer something to the forge before we begin. 10:30am-12pm : Forge Students will take turns heating and hammering their tool. First flattening, then shaping the end, then curving the metal on the horn, then decorating the handle. 12-12:30pm : Snack and Discussion Do we think about metal work differently after having done it? How could we make tools in the apocalypse? 12:30 - 1:45pm : Finishing Tools Using the hand files, participants will shape edges, file serrated edges if desired. Sand down center if they wish 1:45pm - 2pm: Clean up
