ARVADA, CO — Arvada's 2020 4th of July fireworks celebration has been canceled amid the spread of the coronavirus, city officials announced Friday. Under state and local health orders, the fireworks celebration posted too much of a risk to people's safety, the city said.
Arvada officials consulted with peer cities, reviewed city processes and looked at public safety requirements before making the decision. Attempting to maintain social distancing requirements and control crowding near the Stenger Complex would've posed a risk to community members and city staff, officials said.
"Recognizing both the importance of the annual Independence Day celebration to the Arvada community and an opportunity to maintain connections with neighbors during this time of physical distancing, the City has announced a reimagined neighborhood-focused approach to 4th of July celebrations in Arvada," the city said in a news release.

The city is inviting Arvadans to celebrate the holiday by decorating their front porches, balconies or driveways in red, white and blue. Residents are asked to share their photos on social media, with #ArvadaPorchFest. Those who use the hashtag will automatically be eligible to win a randomly-selected special prize, officials said.
