Description

Press release from the City of Colorado Springs: March 31, 2022 Crews are pouring 38 truck loads of cement on the Platte Avenue bridge over Sand Creek today. It's the final section of concrete on the surface of the bridge and marks a key milestone in the third phase of the bridge replacement project. There are four phases to the project with an expected completion by fall of 2022. The work will take place March 31, weather dependent. To accommodate this, there will be some lane closures. All business access will remain open throughout construction. Cyclists and pedestrians are reminded of the restricted access around the site during construction. Built in 1956, the two Platte Avenue bridges over Sand Creek suffered from flood damage in 2008 and overall degradation of the structures. The City is now replacing the two existing bridges with one bridge structure and adding sidewalks along the north and south sides of Platte Avenue over the creek. The new bridge will accommodate future growth along this major east-west transportation corridor by providing additional lanes on Platte Avenue and new traffic signals at the Space Center Drive intersection. The total project cost is approximately $14 million, funded in part by the Pikes Peak Rural Transportation Authority and a federal grant.
