NEW BRUNSWICK, NJ — New Brunswick and the Rutgers campus have been hit by a crime wave in the past week: First, there was a carjacking Sunday in the area of Bishop and Neilson streets, where a gray 2000 Toyota Camry was taken by force, said New Brunswick Police. Last Thursday, March 31 three cars were stolen from the Yellow Lot on the Livingston campus (85 Rockafeller Road, Piscataway), said Rutgers campus police. The cars were stolen sometime between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. that day. All the cars had been locked. One of the vehicles has since been recovered by a local police agency. No arrests have been made. This comes after multiple cars parked in Rutgers campus parking lots had their catalytic converters stolen in February. This happened at 9:55 p.m. when the college student was walking on Harvey Street near Somerset Street. The Rutgers student was not injured and three men have been charged in that incident: Ceferino Victoria-Pelaez, 39, of New Brunswick, Eduardo Funez, 20, of New Brunswick and Sergio Herrera-Gutierrez, 34, of New Brunswick. All have been charged with offenses related to robbery and illegal weapons possession. Get great local news.
