JOLIET, IL — An overnight traffic stop in downtown Joliet over the weekend led to the arrests of two young men out of Chicago who are now facing felony charges after Joliet police say they seized a large amount of packaged marijuana from their automobile.
Corbin Poindexter, 22, was booked into the Will County Jail on charges of possessing marijuana with intent to deliver. His passenger, Rolando Martinez, 21, was booked into county detention on charges of aggravated assault on a peace officer and obstructing identification.
Around 2:15 a.m. Saturday, the two young men were stopped by Joliet police near Cass and North Joliet Streets for a vehicle registration violation, Joliet police said.
Because their car smelled like marijuana, the car was searched with the assistance of a Joliet police K9, and a large amount of marijuana packaged for sale was found inside, police said.
According to Joliet police, Martinez repeatedly challenged the officers to a fight. Martinez took a fighting stance and again threatened to physically harm the officers, officials said.
"While being processed at the Joliet Police Department, Martinez refused to confirm his identity," police spokesman Dwayne English indicated. "Officers eventually confirmed his identity, and he was processed without further incident."
Martinez was released from the Will County Jail on Sunday after posting 10 percent of his $75,000 bail. Jail logs listed a Summit address for him. Poindexter was freed on Saturday night after posting 10 percent of his $10,000 bail, logs show.
