Press release from San Diego Community College District: April 1, 2022 Acclaimed activist and author of "The Color Purple," Alice Walker, will be a featured speaker during a May 31 investiture celebration for San Diego Community College District Chancellor Carlos O. Cortez, Ph.D. The free, public event, "A home run for social justice and inclusion," will take place from 4:30-6:30 p.m., with gates open at 3:30 p.m., at Petco Park in downtown San Diego. The event is being hosted by the SDCCD Board of Trustees, who selected Cortez last spring after a national search. In July 2021, he became the SDCCD's first new chancellor in 17 years. The investiture will include speeches, performances, and multimedia presentations highlighting the district's commitment to student success, academic excellence, social justice, equity, inclusion and access. The keynote speaker, Alice Walker, is an internationally celebrated writer, poet and activist whose books include seven novels, four collections of short stories, four children's books, and volumes of essays and poetry. She won the Pulitzer Prize in Fiction in 1983 and the National Book Award. Attendees are encouraged to show off their San Diego spirit and come dressed representing any of the district's four colleges or favorite local sports team. The first 200 to enter the ballpark will receive a free San Diego Padres/SDCCD commemorative cap.
