WATSONVILLE, CA — The Pajaro Valley Unified School District is extending school closures until April 10, a week later than it previously planned.
The district Board of Trustees voted Saturday to close all schools from March 16 to 27, except for non-essential staff, Superintendent Michelle Rodriguez said in a note to the community. Spring break is scheduled from March 30 to April 3.
The decision came after Santa Cruz County issued Monday a shelter in place order for the entire county until April 7, calling on the public to stay at home unless they are receiving essential services or purchasing essential goods.
Nine cases of the virus have been confirmed in Santa Cruz County as of Monday. The county is considered to have community spread, since public health officials are unsure of how some patients became infected.

Remote learning will begin Monday, March 23 for students with recently cleaned district-owned Chromebooks. One hotspot per house is available for pickup, for families without internet, Rodriguez said.
Checkout will be at school on Thursday or Friday for students who do not already have Chromebooks.
Students in second grade or younger will primarily rely on instructional packets, available for pickup weekly at schools from 8 to 10 a.m. and 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on Mondays. Completed packets should be submitted at the same time that new packets are picked up.
