Join the Friends of the Boston Harborwalk as we explore Boston's "other" Big Dig located on Deer Island.
We'll begin with a walk along the entire perimeter of the island. Along the way, we'll stop at memorials erected in honor of Native Americans and Irish immigrants. After this perimeter walk, we'll view America's second largest wastewater treatment plant and discuss how this engineering marvel transformed Boston Harbor from a severely polluted body of water to one of the cleanest harbors in the world. The tour will begin and end at the public parking lot just past Winthrop's residential neighborhood on Tafts Street. Please do not park within the residential neighborhood. This walk is approximately 2.5 miles long.
All participants must register in advance. Please wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your own water bottle. The tour has a $10 charge.
The Friends of the Boston Harborwalk is a volunteer group affiliated with Boston Harbor Now. The group meets monthly to promote awareness, public enjoyment and local stewardship of Boston’s 43-mile Harborwalk. For more information on joining the group, please contact Mike Manning, Chair, at [email protected].
