HAMDEN, CT — Five people were displaced from their home after a kitchen fire at an apartment building Saturday night in Hamden, according to officials. Crews responded to the 300 block of Pine Rock Avenue around 10 p.m. after dispatchers received numerous calls from neighbors reporting the fire, according to Hamden Deputy Fire Marshal Nelson Hwang. On arrival, firefighters reported smoke coming from the third floor of a three-story apartment building. "The crew from Engine 2 encountered smoke and heat when they entered the apartment," Hwang wrote in a news release. "The firefighters were able to bring the fire quickly under control and began overhaul operations." One of the two tenants was home at the time of the fire and was able to get himself out of the apartment, according to Hwang. Hwang said the apartment sustained significant fire and smoke damage. The apartment is uninhabitable and the residents were relocated by the town, according to Hwang. The American Red Cross provided assistance to five residents who were displaced, Hwang said. "During the course of the investigation it was determined that the fire origin was in a pot on the stove top which spread, igniting the cabinets above," Hwang said. "The Hamden Fire Marshal's Office would like to remind residents not to leave the kitchen when cooking and when finished to make sure the stove top is turned off."
