"Gray skies create a unique ambiance." Cruciana told Patch. Susana Cruciana Photo Thousand Steps Beach, a popular site for residents and tourists alike, is named for its steep and recently-repaired beach access stairwell. While the stairwell is less than 1,000 steps — it's more like 218 — it's universally agreed that the trip down the stairs and to the beach is far more pleasant than the trek back up to Pacific Coast Highway.
