MARYLAND — Coronavirus-related hospitalizations have reached the highest level in Maryland in nearly five months. On Wednesday, 805 people were hospitalized with the virus, the Maryland Department of Health reported — an increase of 44 in the past 24 hours. The last time hospitalizations were above 800 in Maryland was June 12, when 836 patients had the virus. "More people are getting infected with the virus, more people are being hospitalized, more people are going into intensive care, and more Marylanders are dying," Gov. Larry Hogan said Tuesday, at a news conference where he ordered a reduction in restaurant capacity to 50 percent, starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday. In Baltimore City and Montgomery County, local governments have ordered restaurants to scale back to 25 percent capacity this week. In Montgomery, food service establishments must keep records of diners for contact tracing purposes. Statewide, Hogan also announced these measures: A health advisory discouraging gatherings of more than 25 people. An out-of-state travel advisory urging people not to travel to certain areas where the virus was spreading.A surge capacity order for Baltimore Convention Center Field Hospital, Laurel Hospital and Adventist Takoma Park Hospital to take patients.Precautions increased at Maryland nursing homes including testing of visitors, staff and stockpiling of personal protective equipment.
