Hundreds Turn Out For Temecula Protest

TEMECULA, CA — Close to a thousand peaceful protesters turned out in Temecula Friday to demonstrate against police brutality. While some participants gathered early, hundreds more joined by afternoon, marching from Duck Pond at the corner of Rancho California and Ynez roads, to the steps of City Hall in Old Town, then back again. Law enforcement cordoned off streets to allow safety for protesters and motorists. There were no immediate reports of unrest. A large turnout was expected. "Rest assured that City Representatives and the Sheriff Dept. will continue to monitor and ensure the safety of those exercising their right to freedom of speech, and the community," the city posted on its Facebook page. Friday's march included a moment of silence for George Floyd, the 46-year-old man who died in police custody Memorial Day. Four former Minneapolis police officers have been charged in the case, including a second-degree murder charge for Derek Chauvin. Protests, as long as they are peaceful, are expected to continue into the evening and through the weekend in Temecula and other areas across the county. The march was on the heels of James "Stew" Stewart's resignation from Temecula City Council and his position as mayor.
