Maryland Hits New All-Time-High For Coronavirus Hospitalizations

MARYLAND — The number of people treated for coronavirus in Maryland hospitals has hit an all-time high. As of Monday, the Maryland Department of Health reports 1,742 people are hospitalized with the virus. This is the fourth time in the past seven days the state has broken a record for hospitalizations during the pandemic. Here they are in order, with Wednesday's hospitalization count breaking the previous record of 1,711 set April 30. Wednesday, Dec. 9 — 1,715 patientsThursday, Dec. 10 — 1,720 patientsFriday, Dec. 11 — 1,729 patientsMonday, Dec. 14 — 1,742 patients "We are experiencing a post-Thanksgiving surge" in the spread of coronavirus, Gov. Larry Hogan said Thursday, two weeks after the holiday. At that point, he said 88 percent of acute care beds and 87 percent of ICU beds were occupied, while 143 surge beds were in use at the alternate care sites added to increase hospital capacity. "Our hospitals are nearing capacity. Our death toll is climbing," Hogan said. "We continue to be in a state of emergency."
