BALTIMORE, MD — A gunman died and an officer was shot after an exchange of gunfire Monday morning in Baltimore, according to police.
The officer was hospitalized with a leg injury that officials said was not believed to be life-threatening.
He was in good condition, Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said at a news conference before 1 p.m. Monday.
The shooting occurred at 9:41 a.m. near North Ellamont Street at Westwood Avenue, where officers were planning to serve a warrant related to a domestic violence case when someone drove up, got out of a vehicle and shot into a police surveillance vehicle in the area, Harrison said.
One officer was shot in the upper thigh, he said.
At least one officer returned fire, Harrison said, and the gunman was shot multiple times.
It was unclear whether the gunman was related to the domestic violence case, according to the commissioner.
The injured officer was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center. The gunman was also taken to shock trauma, where Harrison said he was pronounced deceased. No further information was available about the suspect pending next-of-kin notification.
Officers involved in the shooting were wearing body-worn cameras, according to police.
