Water Week Event: Art & Science Open House at the Lancaster Science Factory

FREE ADMISSION: Special water-themed science and art activities to kick off Water Week! Join us for a water-themed First Friday with special activities led by The Keystone 10 Million Tree Partnership/ Chesapeake Bay Foundation and the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design / Center for Creative Exploration. The Keystone 10 Million Tree Partnership/ Chesapeake Bay Foundation team will be onsite at the Science Factory to demonstrate the rainfall simulator and promote planting of native tree and plants. The rainfall demonstration provides opportunity for the audience to witness how the land, under differing conditions, reacts to varying amounts of “controlled/simulated” rainfall. In general, healthy and well managed soils absorb and hold water, while less healthy soils experience structural collapse and erosion. The “take away” is to understand we can prevent flooding, increase water infiltration, reduce wasteful and harmful runoff, improve the negative impacts of climate change, and support sustainable communities by how we manage and care for soils. The desired result is for audience members to advocate for/or implement soil health techniques at their homes and communities. PCA&D Center for Creative Exploration presents the activity “Making Friends with Macroinvertebrates!” Learn all about and create your favorite macroinvertebrate! Kids ages 5 and up will use paper and various media to design and build their very own, giant version of the important macroinvertebrates that help us determine water quality in our local waterways. Participants will be led through the three steps to making a stuffed paper water-friend, which they can take home, while they learn about their anatomy and habitat. This workshop is being led by artists and designers at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design under the direction of artist and Center for Creative Exploration at PCA&D educator, Nichole Madonna. pcad.edu/cce
