The Spanish and British explorers first reached Florida in 1559. They arrived on Aug. 14 with a fleet of ships and 1,500 men. After a series of meetings in June, they landed near Pensacola and sent an exploring party into the interior of the state. The Spanish were not happy about the French presence in the area, so they sent missionaries to convert the natives to Catholicism. More than thirty Spanish missions were built in Florida.
Despite the restrictions on migration, the state has a long history of migration. Humans first arrived in Florida around 10,000 B.C., and their first inhabitants included woolly mammoths, Native Americans, brave conquistadores, pirates, geniuses, millionaires, astronauts, and Native Americans. In 1790, Spanish government officials permitted the Spanish to stay in Florida and allow the Americans to come in. In 1811, President Madison authorized an attack on Florida.
