Here are the top three stories in Charleston today: A "scaled-back version" of five anti-critical race theory bills introduced by South Carolina House legislators over the past two months has advanced after 18 total hours of debate. In a 12-5 vote, the new legislation was passed by the House Education and Public Works Committee this past Tuesday. Many Democrats who voted against the measure objected to the Republicans using a two-thirds majority to advance the bill as a committee bill. (Free: Charleston City Paper; Subscription: Charleston Post Courier)A Lowcountry woman is being honored by her former Tennessee college for integrating the school 70 years ago. DeLaris Johnson Risher of Orangeburg and Lelia Robinson of Texas were the first two Black students to go to Scarritt College for Christian Workers in Nashville in the 1950s. The former college is now a religious retreat located in Nashville's Midtown Music Row called the Scarritt Bennett Center. The center is set to name a house in the women's honor. (Live 5 News WCSC) City Council leaders voted Thursday night to hire an urban planner before committing to plans for the land on Morrison Drive in the Charleston peninsula. The Housing Committee wants the land to be utilized for affordable housing, while others say the land has more potential. "I think [affordable housing] needs to be spread across urban areas a lot more densely," said Councilman Dickie Schweers. "The property we're talking about has extraordinary value.
