Romeoville Police Crack Down On Distracted, Texting Drivers In April

ROMEOVILLE, IL — Romeoville residents run the risk of getting ticketed if they are caught texting while behind the wheel of their vehicle during an upcoming month-long campaign by police to cut down on distracted driving. The Romeoville Police department is one of 200 police agencies across Illinois that have partnered with the Illinois Department of Transportation and Illinois State Police as part of the "Drop It and Drive" campaign that is being conducted during Distracted Driver Awareness Month. "Texting while driving puts everyone on the road at risk by distracting a driver visually, manually, and cognitively," Sergeant Brian McClellan said in a news release. "During Distracted Driving Awareness Month, we're working to increase awareness of these dangers and encourage all motorists to give driving their full attention." At a time when traffic fatalities are on the rise in Illinois and across the country, the Romeoville Police Department is committed to reducing the traffic crashes caused by distractions like texting or talking on a cell phone. Local drivers can expect to see increased patrols and enforcement zones during the entire month of April, police officials said. The Romeoville Police Department will be ticketing drivers who text or use their cell phones while driving. The distracted driving campaign is paid for with federal traffic safety funds administered through the Illinois Department of Transportation.
