Press release from Portland Public Schools: March 29, 2022 Hundreds of students from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School arrived at the Moda Center Saturday night, decked out in red and black, head-to-toe, in Blazers jerseys, t-shirts and caps. The Blazers hosted about 400 students, teachers and supporters from the school with free tickets. They celebrated every Blazers basket and rebound and didn't seem to mind all that much when the final buzzer sounded and Portland lost to Houston, 115-98. "We had such a great time," said King Principal Teresa Seidel "We really appreciate the Blazers for supporting our students. It was a memorable night for all of us." The Blazers reached out to the school and provided tickets after the disturbing discovery of vandalism, racist hate speech and graffiti at the school in late February, at the end of Black History Month. In addition to the tickets, the team will send Blaze the mascot to the school, at 4906 NE Sixth Avenue for two assemblies on Friday afternoon.
