New School In Anne Arundel: Board Of Education Prepares Design

MILLERSVILLE, MD — Housing two middle schools and a high school, the Old Mill Educational Complex is one of the busiest campuses in the county. The grounds are on track to get a little less crowded, however. The Anne Arundel County Board of Education will vote on the design of a new Old Mill Middle School South during its Wednesday meeting. If all goes as planned, the school would open in the fall of 2024. Millersville middle schoolers go to one of two neighboring facilities: Old Mill Middle School North or Old Mill Middle School South. The two separate schools share a lobby and an auditorium with the attached Old Mill High School. Together, the schools are home to more than 4,000 students. About 2,200 attend the high school, and around 1,000 go to each middle school. The design proposal calls for a new Old Mill Middle School South to be built a few blocks away on the current Southgate Park. The construction would free up some space on campus and move 1,000 students out of the 45-year-old building. During its Wednesday meeting, the board will also discuss a family survey on the 2021-2022 school calendar. The meeting will be the last for outgoing board members Terry Gilleland (District 32), Eric Grannon (District 33), Robert Leib (District 30) and Julie Hummer (At-Large). They will be replaced by recently-elected members Robert Silkworth (District 2), Corine Frank (District 3) and Joanna Bache Tobin (District 6). The virtual meeting starts at 6 p.m. It will be streamed via Comcast and Broadstripe on Channel 96, Verizon on Channel 36 and the internet on Anne Arundel County Public Schools' YouTube channel.
