Two title fights headline the event, but the true star of the evening is Russian-born Swede Khamzat Chimaev. At 27 years of age, he’s widely considered the most impressive prospect in the sport today and perhaps of all time. What is indisputable is that no one has performed better in their first four UFC fights than he has. Despite being ranked outside the top 10 in the welterweight division, Chimaev is a massive -600 favorite against no. 2 ranked Gilbert Burns, one of the best veterans in the 170-pound weight class. Both championship fights – featherweight and bantamweight – feature massive favorites – and, of course, huge underdogs. Alexander Volkanovski, will defend his 145-pound belt against Jung “The Korean Zombie” Chan-sung, and Aljamain Sterling will try to keep his 135-pound gold against Petr Yan. Volkanovski and Yan are -630 and -450, respectively. Is there an underdog to bet here? Do the huge favorites have value? Let’s take a look. All lines are current as of March 28, at 8:00 a.m. ET at DraftKings. UFC 273 Card & Schedule The UFC 273 slate will be held at VyStar Veterans Memorial Arena in Jacksonville, Fla., a place that’s becoming quite comfortable hosting massive UFC cards. Early prelims will begin at 6:15 p.m. ET, with the official prelims starting at 8 p.m. ET. The five-fight main card will begin at 10 p.m. ET. That main card features the following fights: Featherweight Championship: Alexander Volkanovski (C) vs. Korean Zombie Bantamweight Championship: Aljamain Sterling (C) vs. Petr Yan (IC) Welterweight: Gilbert Burns vs. Khamzat Chimaev Strawweight: Mackenzie Dern vs. Tecia Torres Middleweight: Kelvin Gastelum vs. Nassourdine Imavov UFC Sportsbook Play of the Day Before placing your next UFC 273 bet, you should know that Caesars Sportsbook is one of the best around. PayPalVISAMasterCardBank TransferRead Review UFC 273 Predictions Alexander Volkanovski vs. Korean Zombie The Australian Volkanovski (23-1), a former elite rugby player, is a massive favorite in this fight, and it’s deserved. He’s on a 20-fight win streak, running through one of the deepest divisions in the sport on the way to the undisputed title. Zombie (17-6) is coming off a win, but his loss before that was a convincing defeat to Brian Ortega – the man Volkanovski recently smashed. MMA math isn’t something your bankroll should live by, but it is notable here. The Aussie is just too good, and a loss on April 9 would be around the 25th biggest upset in the history of the UFC, according to Tapology. Volkanovski by Decision (-630) at DraftKings Wager: 1 Unit You won’t find many people picking Zombie here, so the prediction comes down to the method of victory for the Aussie. Zombie is super durable, and Volkanovski has won by decision in his last four fights. This is probably the most likely outcome. Yan threw a knee in the fourth round against a grounded (and exhausted) Sterling, a strike that is against the sport’s rules. It appeared Sterling, who never lost consciousness, could have continued, but he elected not to, and the belt was his in a cloud of controversy. He was snubbed an Oscar nomination for his financially savvy performance on the floor of the Octagon. It was cringe at the time, but in hindsight, it was genius for his bank account. Yan, who hails from Siberia, was able to claim the interim championship belt against the dangerous Cory Sandhagen in October. While Sterling, a New Yorker, was nursing an injury after winning the belt, Yan was able to grab another win and secure the rematch. Yan by Decision (-475) at DraftKings Wager: 1 Unit Despite some promising early pressure by Sterling, Yan appeared to be cruising to a decision victory in their first fight, and there is no reason to assume that this isn’t the most likely outcome in the rematch. MMA rematches tend to be closer fights. Also, consider the cage size. Their first meeting was in the smaller Octagon at UFC Apex, and the bout on April 9 will be in a more standard sports arena with a larger cage. That gives Sterling some more room to use his reach, which could boost the odds of the fight going the distance. Yan is too good for the cage size to tip the odds in Sterling’s favor, but the extra space gives Yan by decision bettors a bit more to like than Yan by KO/TKO. Moneyline -475 Petr Yan Defeats Aljamain Sterling DRAFTKINGS SPORTSBOOK WELCOME OFFER Bet $5, Get $200 Free DraftKings LogoBET $20, PAYOUT $24 Gilbert Burns vs. Khamzat Chimaev The UFC is more popular globally than it’s ever been, and the most highly-touted prospect the promotion has ever seen to date is current rising star Chimaev. The Chechnyan-born Swede has been a wrecking ball over his 10-fight pro career, four of which have been in the UFC. He’s won all his fights by finish (6 by KO/TKO and 4 by submission), and he’s won two by KO/TKO and two by way of submission in the UFC. But he’s even better than his record looks at first glance. He’s been hit by a punch just once in four UFC fights, the last three victories coming in the first round. One of his wins was a flawless 17-second KO of a UFC veteran in late 2020. Other MMA pros have been heaping praise on Chimaev, who has drawn many comparisons to the retired Khabib Nurmagomedov. Chimaev is a lankier version with more devastating kickboxing. His only weaker skillset appears to be the takedown, but once on the ground he’s just as much of a juggernaut with ground-and-pound and jiu-jitsu as the seemingly invincible Khabib. He’s the star of the card on April 9. This is considered the “people’s main event” of the evening. Chimaev by Decision (-510) at DraftKings Wager: 1 Unit Chimaev could win in any fashion. With this fight being three rounds, it might seem less likely Chimaev finds a finish against Burns. If Burns can defend some takedowns and keep the fight on the feet for relatively long stretches, he may be able to prolong the bout. However, Chimaev has what appears to be a massive edge in kickboxing, thanks in part to his size and reach. Burns, in the past, fought a weight class below, while Chimaev recently competed at a weight class above. The size and power should be evident here. Like the Volkanovski line, a Chimaev loss here would be among the top-30 upsets in UFC history. That’s truly remarkable for a 27-year-old with just four UFC matches so far. Moneyline -510 Khamzat Chimaev Defeats Gilbert Burns DRAFTKINGS SPORTSBOOK WELCOME OFFER Bet $5, Get $200 Free DraftKings LogoBET $20, PAYOUT $24 Mackenzie Dern vs. Tecia Torres Dern (11-2) looks to get back into the win column against the veteran Torres (13-5). The jury is still out on the 29-year-old’s striking evolution, but with Dern’s elite grappling background, she’s always in a fight. Torres, 32, is coming off three straight wins and looks to be in hitting her prime. Oddsmakers have this as a pick’em. Torres probably has the wrestling to keep the fight on the feet, and her striking should give her the edge over Dern. It’s likely to be a close one, perhaps a grinding fight. Torres by Decision (-110) at DraftKings Wager: 1 Unit A tough fight to call with confidence, but Torres gets the nod. She’s the slight favorite, and only one of her 13 professional wins came via TKO, while Dern has never lost by stoppage. She’s not submitting Dern, so her path to victory is likely on the scorecards. Moneyline -110 Tecia Torres Defeats Mackenzie Dern DRAFTKINGS SPORTSBOOK WELCOME OFFER Bet $5, Get $200 Free DraftKings LogoBET $20, PAYOUT $38 Kelvin Gastelum vs. Nassourdine Imavov (UPDATE: CANCELED) The Gastelum vs. Imavov fight has been canceled due to Imavov having visa issues. The hope is that Gastelum will have a new opponent announced. If and when he does, we will update you. Gastelum (17-8) will be the underdog for his second fight in a row. The Californian is still only three years removed from a very competitive fight with middleweight king Israel Adesanya, and so there’s still hope he can turn his career around. Gastelum is a deceptive 30 years old, amassing a wealth of experience in the Octagon at a young age. But that experience comes with miles on the tires. He’ll have the significantly higher odometer on April 9, four years the senior of the surging 26-year-old Imavov (11-3). Imavov is on a roll with back-to-back knockout wins in 2021 heading into this fight. Many consider the Russian a future title contender in the division. Is now his time? Gastelum is stuck in reverse with consecutive decision losses (albeit against stiffer competition) and five defeats over his last six. All the momentum is with the Russian. GASTELUM VS. IMAVOV PREDICTION: Imavov by decision Gastelum has never been finished by KO/TKO in 25 career pro fights, though it’s been close. Imavov stands a solid chance of chipping away at his opponent and finishing him toward the end of the fight, but that is probably less likely than the judges having the say. It should be a standup show, and with Gastelum having less reach and less confidence due to recent losses, Imavov will likely get the nod in a fairly convincing win.
