Hawkins Scholarship. This small class of students were reassigned to Little Rock’s four other high schools as a result of The LRSD desegregation plan of 1971 and did not graduate their senior year at their beloved Mann High. They reunited for their first reunion on 1982 naming themselves the Horace Mann Transitional Class of 1972. They committed themselves to give back to the community and in 2002, they started the Edwin L. Hawkins Scholarship named after their principal. Since the inception of the scholarship, HMTC72 has awarded $50,000 on scholarships and in celebration of their illustrious 50 years since graduation, they pledged to award $50,000 to students in one year, the same amount it took them 20 years to provide to students. The group is thrilled to have as their Saturday night banquet speaker, Dr. Daniel Black, author and professor of African-American Studies at Morehouse and Clark Atlanta colleges. Dr Black has authored 8 books and he was raised in Conway County, AR. The weekend culminates with a “the POWER of the ‘72 worship service conducted by class members returning to where it all started at Horace Mann Middle School auditorium. They will savor sweet memories of the last 50 years and stimulated with visions of what they are empowered to accomplish over the next 50 years!
