HARRISON, NY — A contingent of beautiful minds from Harrison High School took the 2022 Regeneron Westchester Science & Engineering Fair (WESEF) by storm. Students brought home 15 awards for research in categories, including Behavioral & Social Sciences, Chemistry, Environmental Sciences, Cellular & Molecular Biology, Behavioral and Social Sciences, Plant Sciences and Animal Sciences. The fair serves area high school students who have conducted original research projects in Westchester, Putnam and Sullivan Counties and are interested in sharing their research, competing for awards and a chance to attend the Regeneron International Science & Engineering Fair (ISEF) in Atlanta, from May 8 - 13. Ten young scientists from Harrison High School won 15 awards, including two grand prizes, at the prestigious fair. The two WESEF grand prize winners were Jack Kelly and Mai Blaustein. Along with eighteen other finalists from the Hudson Valley, they will present their research at ISEF this May in Atlanta. There will be about 1,800 students from more than 75 countries competing. Harrison High School winners: 1st Place Awards were sponsored by Regeneron Pharmaceuticals. Winners received a gold medal and $125. Behavioral and Social Sciences: Jack KellyChemistry: Mai Blaustein 2nd Place Awards were sponsored by Con Edison. Winners received a silver medal and $100. Environmental Sciences: Morgan Remeza 3rd Place Awards were sponsored by Boehringer Ingelheim Cares Foundation and winners received a medallion and $75. Sciences: Katherine Pflieger 4th Place Awards were sponsored by the Westchester Academy of Medicine and winners received a medallion and $50. Cellular and Molecular Biology: Nicole GiandomenicoPlant Sciences: Ariella Blackman American Meteorological Society Award certificates were given to projects for creative scientific endeavors in atmospheric, oceanic and hydrologic sciences. Plant Sciences: Ariella Blackman ASM Materials Education Foundation Award certificates were given to outstanding projects in materials engineering. Chemistry: Mai Blaustein United States Air Force Award certificates were awarded to outstanding projects in engineering, mathematics, computer science, life science and/or physical science. Behavioral and Social Sciences: Macarena Hesse Teatown Young Environmentalist Awards of $50 sponsored by Teatown Lake Reservation were given to projects that aim to protect natural habitats and/or ecosystems. Animal Sciences: Zaynab Faisal Environmental Perspiration Awards of $100 sponsored by Robert Weireter were given to students who demonstrated a high level of perseverance and dedication. Environmental Sciences: Morgan Remeza Honorable Mention Award certificates and $25 sponsored by WESEF alumni were given to: Behavioral and Social Sciences: Yuiko SuzukiBehavioral and Social Sciences: Keelan Vaswani A video of last week's awards ceremony can be found here.
