WOODBURY, MN — Woodbury was one of more than 20 cities in Minnesota to receive direct payments from the federal American Rescue Plan Act. The city was awarded just over $6 million from the coronavirus-relief program, according to the U.S. Department of the Treasury. ARPA funding to local, state and tribal governments across the country totaled $350 billion, which was meant to help officials respond to the COVID-19 pandemic and "address disparities in communities hardest hit by the pandemic," the Treasury Department said. The American Rescue Plan Act sent $2.8 billion in coronavirus-relief funding to Minnesota. That included $1.11 billion in direct payments to Minnesota counties, $644 million for 21 large cities and $377 million for non-entitlement units of government. Here's How Much Space You Can Rent For $1,400 In Woodbury State and local governments can use the funding to replace lost public sector revenue; respond to pandemic-related public health and economic impacts; provide extra pay for essential workers; and invest in water, sewer, and broadband infrastructure. Woodbury's ARPA allocation of $6,012,584 was the sixth-smallest among the 21 large Minnesota cities that received direct funding from the program. Woodbury received its first half-payment of just over $3 million in May 2021 and is due to get the other half in May 2022, according to Jason Egerstrom, the city's communications manager. 911 Services Restored After National Outage Hit Washington County Woodbury has not yet spent its ARPA funding or identified a timetable for while the funds will be used, though the City Council has directed staff to use it for future water infrastructure improvements, Egerstrom said. Officials have until Dec. 31, 2024, to determine how to spend ARPA funding. Woodbury's ARPA funding "will provide much needed public infrastructure funding related to sewer and water infrastructure at a time when outside federal funding is, and will continue to be, critical for Woodbury as it navigates the PFAS contamination, aging systems and our growing community," Egerstrom said.
