GREENWICH VILLAGE, NY — Play ball! The Greenwich Village Little Leauge is set to kick off its Opening Day on Saturday with a celebration at Pier 40. Starting up its 38th season, it will be the first time the entire community-led sports organization is fully together in person since 2019. Greenwich Village Little League was founded in 1984 by local parents and only has the restriction that players must live or go to school on the west side of Manhattan north of Canal Street and South of West 59th Street. "We couldn't be more excited to have the whole league back together again," Jackson Rice, the Opening Day chairman, told AMNY. "While it was thrilling to get back on the field last year, we were hampered by COVID restrictions and it felt like more of a soft start." AMNY also reported that GVLL already has over 700 sign-ups from boys and girls ranging from ages 5 to 17. Lower Manhattan Council Member Erik Bottcher, State Senator Brad Hoylman, Manhattan Borough President Mark Levine, and Congressman Jerry Nadler are all expected to attend opening day. There will be a surprise entertainment to end the Opening Day festivities. "Little League believes in the power of youth baseball and softball to teach life lessons that build stronger individuals and communities," GVLL has as its mission statement.
