From the City of New Orleans: September 22, 2020 Today, the City of New Orleans encouraged residents to continue to provide donations and volunteer time to assist roughly 10,500 Hurricane Laura evacuees sheltering in New Orleans. Immediately after Hurricane Laura, Mayor LaToya Cantrell, Councilmember Helena Moreno, the United Way of Southeast Louisiana, and the Junior League of New Orleans partnered to provide resources to evacuees. Led by the New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness and the New Orleans Health Department, the Hurricane Laura Evacuee Resource Center served an average of 550 evacuees daily for over two weeks at the E. N. Morial Convention Center, with approximately 275 NOLA Ready Corps volunteers contributing over 1800 hours of volunteer time. Beginning last week, the administration of the Resource Center and donations management were transitioned to the United Way HandsOn Entergy Volunteer Center, a contractor of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness. HandsOn continues to solicit donations and recruit volunteers. The City of New Orleans encourages residents to contribute in the following ways: Volunteer Sign up for a shift to volunteer with HandsOn at the Hurricane Laura Evacuee Resource Center at the Convention Center. Shifts are available Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. or 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. Volunteer roles include: Donation intake and sorting Tracking inventory Managing and stocking donation tables Helping greet and assist evacuees coming through the line Expect to serve over 500 evacuees each day on average. Masks are required and are provided. Sign up to volunteer. Donate Individuals can drop off donations at the locations listed below, based on each location's parameters.
