MAHWAH, NJ — Mahwah High School's Kyle Teel, one of the nation's top prep baseball prospects, is the New Jersey Gatorade Player of the Year. Teel is Mahwah High's first Gatorade Player of the Year honoree after finishing his 2019 season with a .574 batting average to go along with 31 RBIs and eight home runs. Teel, who played shortstop and catcher, also finished with a 0.60 earned run average from the mound. He finished his prep career with a cumulative batting average of .430 and 14 home runs. Teel has signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Virginia, ranked 17 prior to the NCAA season's stoppage, according to the Baseball America poll. "Kyle Teel is the best player that I have ever coached or coached against," said Mahwah High head coach Jeff Remo. "He has all of the tools to succeed at the next level and beyond. He has been the leader of our baseball team for the past three years." New Jersey's top prospect, Teel was the country's number 16 best prospect in the class of 2020 according to Prep Baseball Report. He was one of 80 players invited to the Major League Baseball Prospect Development Pipeline League last summer. In addition to his on-field contributions, Teel has volunteered locally as a youth baseball and football coach, and has maintained a weighted B-plus average in the classroom, according to a news release from the Gatorade Player of the Year program.
