Bergen County Reports 263 Probable Coronavirus Deaths, 36 Cases

BERGEN COUNTY, NJ — The New Jersey Department of Health is reporting 36 new positive coronavirus cases in Bergen County, as well as 263 probable deaths, a statistic that the state will begin reporting as of today. New Jersey reported 1,854 probable deaths since the outbreak began in March, and, totaled with confirmed deaths, puts state coronavirus deaths at 14,872. In Bergen County, the NJDOH is reporting 1,716 confirmed deaths and 19,167 positive test results as of 1 p.m. on Thursday. These updated totals come as Gov. Phil Murphy praised the state's efforts as a report shows New Jersey is one of three states to have contained the coronavirus. However, Murphy and New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo issued new travel rules on Wednesday, saying travelers from high-infection rate states to New Jersey, New York and Connecticut "must quarantine" for 14 days. Wednesday also marked the United States' single highest day coronavirus case total since the beginning of the pandemic, as more than 36,000 new infections were reported by state health departments across the country. On Thursday, the NJDOH confirmed the coronavirus testing sites at Bergen Community College and PNC Bank Arts Center will close on June 30. However, during a June 23 news conference, Gov. Phil Murphy announced that the state would continue to receive assistance from FEMA and the US Department of Health and Human Services for operations at other community-based testing sites. This news comes as the Trump administration announced plans to close 13 community COVID-19 testing sites across the country, including the sites in New Jersey. Read more: Coronavirus Testing Sites In Paramus, Holmdel To Close June 30 Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco, who made it a nightly ritual to post updated coronavirus numbers on his Facebook page, announced Friday he would begin updating those numbers only on Tuesday and Friday moving forward, citing a decrease in positivity rate. "This does not represent the end, but reflects the ever-changing nature of this situation. We will reevaluate our reporting status in 30 days," he wrote. Someone who is actively sick with COVID-19 can spread the illness to others. That is why CDC recommends that these patients be isolated either in the hospital or at home (depending on how sick they are) until they are better and no longer pose a risk of infecting others. Gov. Phil Murphy issued a new order requiring customers and employees wear face masks while inside essential businesses. The CDC recommends that every American wear a face mask while in public. There is currently no vaccine for COVID-19. While the best way to prevent illness is to avoid virus exposure, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention always recommends taking preventive actions to contain the spread of viruses.
