NEW JERSEY – The pandemic continues to have dire consequences at New Jersey nursing homes and long-term care facilities now that coronavirus deaths have more than doubled in three months (the lists of nursing homes, case totals and fatalities are below). Gov. Phil Murphy, as a result, signed legislation on Wednesday targeted toward bolstering safety, services and protection at long-term care facilities (see the legislation below). The total number of long-term care deaths has increased from 3,247 on May 1 to 7,135, according to state Department of Health statistics. The numbers include patients and staff. The number of cases increased from 18,045 to 38,415 during the same period. The update comes as the number of cases continues to rise in New Jersey. Read more: NJ Coronavirus, School Reopen Updates: Here's What You Need To Know In a bit of wrinkle, the DOH no longer lists all the nursing homes and long-term care facilities that have cases and deaths. Indeed, Patch published a list of more than 400 facilities that had cases and deaths as of May 1. Read more: Mystery Remains As NJ Nursing Home Coronavirus Deaths Keep Rising Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli said only facilities with active outbreaks will be reported each day. Right now, there are 159 long term care facilities with active outbreaks, the DOH said. Persichilli's office said the change was made so the public has a better understanding of the current status of facilities. Once an outbreak in a facility is declared "concluded," it is taken off the list, health officials say. Local officials have relied on the list to show that a spike in local coronavirus cases may be due to an outbreak at a nursing home, and not at a school, business or neighborhood. One such facility was the Ocean Crest Pointe Rehabilitation & Healthcare Center in Point Pleasant Boro, which reported 55 cases and one death by May 1. Read more: 1st Coronavirus Death Report At Point Pleasant Boro Nursing Home Now, the facility isn't even listed on the DOH's outbreak list Indeed, soon after the coronavirus crisis began in March, New Jersey was dealing with a startling rate of cases and deaths at nursing homes and long-term care facilities. As of May 1, the state had lost at least 17 percent of the people in those facilities who had been diagnosed with COVID-19 – which was about quadruple the statewide percentage of total fatalities. Another such place is the Veterans Memorial Home in Paramus, where more than 80 percent of the residents had tested positive for the coronavirus by May 1. At the time, at least 241 people had been diagnosed and more than 50 had died. Read more: NJ Veterans Home Official Quits Now, that facility isn't listed on the DOH's website, either. And the horrors of what was described as a "makeshift morgue" at the Andover Subacute & Rehab Center Two in Sussex County prompted state officials to finally release numbers that show how the coronavirus had ravaged the long-term care community. Read more: 'Makeshift Morgue' Nursing Home In NJ Had Violations, Complaints Andover had among the highest death and case totals in the state, and it drew additional scrutiny after it received subpar ratings in recent years. The overall rating for Andover Subacute and Rehab II is one star over the last three years, placing it "much below average." According to statistics available on May 1, Andover had 174 cases and 46 deaths – a coronavirus fatality rate of 26 percent. Now, Andover is off the list. Lawmakers, meanwhile, have pushed their own series of legislative fixes, and Murphy signed several bills into law on Wednesday that will: Establish certain requirements concerning state's preparedness and response to infectious disease outbreaks, including the COVID-19 pandemic.Establish the New Jersey Task Force on Long-Term Care Quality and Safety.Establish minimum wage requirements for certain long-term care facility staff.Establishes direct care ratio requirements for nursing homes.Require a nursing home care rate study. "The residents and staff of our long-term care facilities have borne an outsized burden of this pandemic," said Murphy. "While we know this has not been a tragedy unique to New Jersey, we will learn from this crisis and emerge as a national model for solving immediate challenges and building future resilience. "These measures not only support our ongoing efforts to get things right for our long-term care residents, staff, and families, but also ensure we have strong measures in place to deal with bad actors in the industry who put profit before people."
