The Black Engineer Week Golf Social builds community by bringing together 100 black engineers and allies to the green Our long-term goal is to increase the number of successful African American engineering professionals in Silicon Valley. The overall objective of this golfing social event during Black Engineer Week is to serve as a social foundation to address retaining and increasing the number of African American Engineers in Silicon Valley. The central hypothesis is that we can broaden the participation of African Americans in engineering in Silicon Valley through academic-industry community-building initiatives. The rationale for the work proposed here is that if we have cross institutionally supported dialogue among African American engineering communities and their allies, we will be taking some early steps to make the environment more conducive to African American success and retention in Silicon Valley. To attain the overall objectives, the golfing event social is part of the Black Engineer Week conference where African American faculty, African American engineering students, and African American Silicon Valley
