Mahwah Museum Launches Veterans Remembrance Project

MAHWAH, NJ — Are you a veteran? The Mahwah Museum wants to hear your story. The museum is creating a biographical archive of men and women from the township who've served in the military, billed as the "Veterans Project." Researchers from the museum already have some information on soldiers who served in the Civil War and World War I, they said in a news release, but "hope to document the military service of our town in a more systematic way." To do so, they need your help. To start, the Museum would like to build an accurate list of the names of Mahwah veterans. "If your father, grandfather, great-grandfather or grandmother served in the military and lived in Mahwah, please contact the museum with that information. Volunteers will then conduct biographical research, looking for obituaries, service records, and photographs," they said. Through oral history style interviews, the museum hopes to learn about the lives of living veterans in the township. (These can be via Zoom, phone, e-mail or traditional mail, they said.) These interviews could be used as profiles on the museum website, and potentially in a future exhibit, the museum said. The project is already underway, with Ramapo College volunteer Bobby Ciarletta and Museum Board member Diane Mateo working to discover the names of township veterans.
