Gun Recovered From Suspect Already On Bail For Gun Charge: PCPD

PORT CHESTER, NY — The Port Chester Police Department said that the efforts of several law enforcement agencies helped take a gun out of the hands of a suspect who had no business holding it in the first place. On Wednesday afternoon, a Port Chester resident walked into the police station to report being threatened by an acquaintance who brandished a gun following a disagreement. The suspect, identified as Diego Orozco, reportedly then fled the scene in his car. The victim gave a partial description of the car and an alert was sent out for all units to be on the lookout for the vehicle. License plate information was provided by the Rye Police Department a short time later. With an assist from the high-tech Westchester County Real Time Crime Center, the car driven by the 29-year-old suspect was located leaving White Plains, possibly entering I-287. Rye police, with Port Chester police units, soon spotted the car driven by Orozco on the exit 11, I-287 ramp. The vehicle was stopped in traffic on the ramp and police decided to box the vehicle in to avoid any chance of a car chase and to protect the cars behind the suspect. Police then conducted a felony stop and ordered the driver to exit the vehicle. Orozco began to hunch down in the vehicle either to conceal something or reach for something, according to officials. After repeatedly ordering Orozco out of his car, he eventually complied and was taken into custody, police said. A loaded 9mm semi-automatic handgun was found under the driver's seat, authorities said. Orozco, who is currently out on bail for pending weapons charges from prior incidents, was arraigned and remanded to the Westchester County Jail, according to Port Chester police officials. "The officers involved in this vehicle stop and subsequent recovery of the firearm, showed great professionalism, training, restraint and teamwork to apprehend this armed and dangerous person," Port Chester police said in a statement announcing the arrest. "We would like to recognize the following officer's for a job well done, Captain Nielsen, Officer Arroyo, Officer Pereira, K-9 Mac, Officer Ochoa; Rye Police Department Officer Foti, Officer Calcagni and Officer Strebel. Police officials also thanked the Real Time Crime Center for providing up-to-date information on the suspect's car.
