NEW YORK CITY — A knife-wielding man chased a terrified couple through the Wall Street subway station, slashing the man before fleeing into the street, according to police.
The 47-year-old man — identified in reports as a retired cop — and his wife ran from a fellow passenger who began spitting at them as they got off a northbound 2 train about 3:55 p.m. Wednesday, according to police.
After spitting, the man whipped out a knife and slashed the 47-year-old in his right arm, police said.
The couple ran up the stairs from the platform with the knife-wielding man at their heels until they reached a transit booth, said police.
When the man saw the couple approach an MTA clerk, he ran from the station, according to the NYPD.
The husband was taken to New York-Presbyterian Lower Manhattan Hospital where he received multiple stitches to his arm, the NYPD said. He is a retired NYPD officer, according to a New York Daily News report.
Police released security footage of a man who they carried out the knife attack. He remains unidentified and on the loose as of Thursday morning.
