MARLBOROUGH, MA — One of the longest serving Marlborough police officers and a two-time mayoral candidate turned in his badge this week. Marlborough officer David Garceau retired on Thursday after 42 years, leaving a lasting mark on the department. "Officer Garceau has remained a constant — showing up to work each day, driving his supervisors crazy, and never hesitating to share his experience and words of wisdom with his coworkers," the department wrote in a parting message on Facebook. Garceau also left his mark on the Marlborough political scene. In 2021, he was the only person to challenge longtime Mayor Arthur Vigeant in the general election. He came through a three-way primary in 2019 to challenge Vigeant the first time, earning 36 percent of the vote in the general One of Garceau's planks in the 2021 race was making sure Marlborough's mayor had a retirement date with term limits. He also said, as a born-and-bred Marlborough resident, that he ran for mayor because of his deep ties to the city. "When you move to Marlborough, you are part of a family that has made this city an example for others to take notice. Good people in a good place to live," he said last fall.
