MCLEAN, VA — McLean's upcoming Earth Day observance will get aspiring young artists involved with a recycled art show. McLean art teacher Pamela Saunders is seeking children in the McLean Community Center tax district to join the art show. McLean Earth Day on April 23 will be a drive-thru event at the McLean Community Center with various opportunities to help the planet. One of the featured displays will be Art Alchemy, the children's recycled art show sponsored by Young at Art with Miss Pam. Saunders, known as "Miss Pam," teachers art classes in several McLean schools and holds virtual art classes with children. The Art Alchemy display on Earth Day will feature art with the theme "Let's Face It," which encourages children to research people, arts and animals to create a face using materials like magazines, painting and drawing mediums, and yarn. The art will be made on a 12x12 cardboard square and remain flat for transport purposes. "This is a great way for children to think creatively and innovatively while empowering them to be part of the solution," said Saunders in an email to Patch. Children of all ages who live in the McLean Community Center district (Dranesville District #1A) are invited to participate. The district boundaries are generally the Arlington County line to the east, Difficult Run to the west, Potomac River to the north, and Route 66, Dulles Access Road or Route 7 to the south. See a map of the tax district. Artwork will be displayed outside near the sidewalk parallel to Ingleside Avenue at the McLean Community Center. Artwork will not be returned after the event, so families are encouraged to take photos at the show. Saunders will create an online gallery of the artwork. Families interested in the children's recycled art event can sign up to receive more information. Saunders will provide an animated video on how to make recycled art for the project. Families can work on the art at their own pace, but Saunders will collect artwork at different collection points during the week of April 11. Families will receive instructions by email and will be invited to a private Facebook group to ask questions. The Earth Day event is only open to residents of the McLean Community Center tax district who register for the event.
