BEVERLY, MA — Beverly police are warning residents of a recently reported scam in the city in which they receive a phone call from a number that appears to be coming from the department demanding money to pay for crimes or requesting contributions to fundraising efforts.
Police said they are investigating several reports of cases where the calls appear to be coming from the department's 978-922-1212 phone number.
"The Beverly Police Department will never contact citizens in an effort to get money from you to pay for crimes," Police said. "Furthermore, the department is not currently fundraising."
Police urge any resident who receives this or a similar call to not give the caller any personal information. Then hang up and call the Beverly police dispatch directly to report the incident.
